The 2017 Buick Regal is a great choice if you’re in the market for a midsize, entry-level sedan that’s comfortable, stylish and boasts a generous list of features. While these are all qualities that are hard to pass up, if you want the Regal to run its best, you have to protect its engine with routine maintenance. It may sound like a pain and lots of money, but it will actually save you from piles of cash for repairs being thrown out the window down the road. Plus, who doesn’t want a car that delivers a smooth and enjoyable ride? Here are the top four ways to proactively protect your engine.

1. Change the oil. The number one way to proactively protect your car’s engine is to have its oil changed regularly. This maintenance service is essential to the overall health and performance of your car’s engine. Why exactly is it so important? Here’s why. Your engine requires oil so all of its vital parts will have the lubrication it needs to work properly. When an engine runs, the parts inside use oil to help them slide against one another in a fluid motion. But when an engine lacks an efficient supply of oil or contains an old, dirty supply of oil, these internal parts no longer move in a fluid motion. Instead, they bump against each other and become damaged. Damaged engine parts can mean major costs in repairs and can even lead to irreversible engine damage.

2. Ensure a functioning cooling system. If your car has ever overheated, then you know what a pain it can be. A good way to eliminate the risk of you engine overheating is to make sure your car’s cooling system is functioning properly. The cooling system is made up of four main parts: the radiator, thermostat, water pump and coolant (radiator fluid). Your car’s engine requires a certain amount of coolant circulating through it. This job is performed by the cooling system. If there is an inadequate supply of coolant (typically due to a leak), or if there is another problem looming about, then your engine will overheat. Finding problems with the cooling system ahead of time will save you from serious damage to your engine if it overheats, so be sure to check your coolant level regularly and inspect it for any signs of a leak or other problems.

3. Replace the air filter. You probably never considered that your car’s engine requires oxygen to breathe, but it’s true. Okay, so maybe it doesn’t really breathe like we do, but it does need a continuous supply of air in order to function. And not just any air, but clean air. To make this possible, your engine has an air filter that works to catch all unwanted outside elements like bugs, dirt and leaves before they get sucked into the engine and block its air supply. As great a job as these air filters do, overtime, they get dirty and clogged – two words for useless. If this happens, your engine is starved of oxygen and will become damaged. Luckily, air filters are easy to replace and not very costly. So be sure to have your air filter changed in a timely manner to ensure your engine has a continuous supply of clean air.

4. Check for leaks. Another key way to proactively protect your engine is to check for any signs of leaks. There are two main fluids you want to ensure are not leaking from your engine: oil and antifreeze. Due to the intense heat and pressure under your car’s hood, engine hoses can fail. When rubber hoses become old and cracked, antifreeze and other fluids can leak. When vital fluids your engine needs begin to leak, engine damage can occur.

In order to spot a leak, check under the hood and on the ground beneath your car. You can also use your sense of smell to detect leaks. By staying ahead of a minor leak, you will save your engine from major problems that could eventually arise.
